Reading’s regular indie street food market will continue serving up fresh and local food throughout the lockdown, after changing its mind on plans to temporarily shut.

Blue Collar, which hosted the 2020 British Street Food Awards last weekend, had planned to close for the duration of the second lockdown.

But it has now announced it will continue as a takeaway service every Wednesday and Friday lunchtime from tomorrow (Friday, November 6) until the end of the lockdown, which currently scheduled to continue until Wednesday, December 2.

Blue Collar tweeted: “We hold our hands up. We’ve changed our minds.

“After listening to all your comments today and, with our food traders wanting to crack on, we’re going to give it a go as a takeaway service every Wednesday and Friday lunchtime.

“We’re going to review it week by week, and it’ll be a slightly reduced lineup but, in these brutal times, we still think food can provide a bit of escapism. Let’s see how we go.”

The Blue Collar street food market runs from 11.30am – 2.30pm, every Wednesday and Friday, at Market Place, RG1 2EG, in the town centre.

Blue Collar fans have reacted with delight at the news.

Helen Copping tweeted: “Work from home Wednesdays are saved.”

While Madeleine Adams added: “Excellent news – may plan one of my daily walks to go into town on Blue Collar days.”

Living Reading, AKA Reading UK, said: “Some good news for everyone in the town centre over the next few weeks.”

Reading UK announced last month that Blue Collar Street Food had been appointed as the operator of the Friday street food market in Market Place from Friday 4 September.

Blue Collar was given a contract to run the market until September 2022, taking over Fridays from CHOW.

In addition to the town centre, Blue Collar run street food markets at Reading FC on match days and on local business parks, along with bespoke events in Forbury Gardens and other locations in Reading.
