Rubbish weighing the equivalent of a dolphin was collected from the streets of Crowthorne.

Environmental group Crowthorne Reduce Our Waste (CROW) invited villagers to help collect rubbish on Sunday, October 18, as part of their annual BIG litter pick event.

Between 10am and 2pm, more than 100 people attended the stall at Crowthorne Market, borrowing litter pickers and bin bags to do their bit in helping clear up their town.

Georgie Morris, lead member for CROW, said: "We had been concerned that people were so focused on the problems of coronavirus, that the urgent issue of climate change was being ignored.

"Recent focus by Sir David Attenborough has helped people to remember that this is the most significant issue of our time and that they need to take action. This litter pick was one thing people could do to make a difference to our local environment and prevent plastics from getting into the water system, however, there is a lot more we can do and we would urge everyone to follow our work to see what else they can do to make a difference."

The event was supported by Crowthorne Parish Council who loaned their equipment to the group. It was also sponsored by the local CO-OP who donated three lovely reusable water bottles for prizes, Kit Kats and cans of water to keep the litter pickers refreshed.

Hardwicke Greengrocers at the market also donated some satsumas for the pickers to enjoy after their hard work.

Prizes were awarded for the best transformation of an area, the heaviest haul of waste, and the strangest item found.

In total, the 110 pickers collected 60 bags of litter weighing a massive 200kg, the equivalent of a bottle nosed dolphin or stag.

Remarkably, one picker found a purse belonging to a local woman who was tracked down and was overwhelmed by having it back.

It had been stolen over a year ago and meant a lot to her as it had been a gift from her late husband which contained some special items. The litter pick was part of Crowthorne’s commitment to looking after its environment and support individuals and businesses to reduce waste at source.

Having been awarded Plastic Free Community Status by Surfers Against Sewage in 2019, CROW continues to spread the word and is keen to get more people involved in taking action to reduce our negative impact on the climate.

CROW would like to thank everyone who attended and helped to make the event a success and congratulate Charlie Woodhouse for the best transformation of an area, the Howell family for the strangest find (a bit of purple guitar) and Yariv and Rose Gelbolingo for the greatest weight picked - 23.7kg!
