We've missed our local high streets - and our partners, parents and kids are set to benefit, a new survey has found. By Vicky Shaw.

Lots of us have treated ourselves to a little luxury or two to help see us through lockdown, whether that was a few more takeaways, online workout or entertainment subscriptions or some new home comforts to make the months pass more easily.

Well, those in relationships might be in line for some more treats, now that shops and businesses are beginning to pick back up again - paid for by someone else!

Nearly a fifth (19%) of people plan to treat their partner or spouse, as more shops and other services in the heart of local communities re-open, according to a new survey by American Express.

Children are also in for the special treatment, with one in six (16%) adults surveyed saying they plan to treat their offspring to something nice too.

Parents won't be missing out either - one in 10 (10%) people also want to buy gifts for their mums and dads, the survey found.

The poll found the top treats people want to spend their money on are restaurant meals and new clothes, followed by drinks at the pub.

What we've missed about our high streets

The survey looked at what we've missed about shopping and spending money out and about during lockdown, too. According to American Express, more than a third (34%) said they'd missed simply being able to browse or window shop.

Although online shopping can be very convenient, many people appreciate the personal touch they get from supporting local businesses, it seems. More than a fifth (22%) have missed the one-to-one contact we get from a friendly chat with shop owners.

The joy of shopping local

More than a quarter (26%) of people have missed not being able to support their local businesses on the high street during closures too.

Staying close to home might be win-win all round, especially for those wishing to avoid public transport and larger, busier shops. Plus, that sense of community connection can bring benefits in its own right too.

American Express is running a 'shop small' offer, which gives eligible card members credits for spending in participating small businesses. The offer runs until September 13, 2020 (more information is available at americanexpress.com/uk/benefits/shop-small).

Journalist and TV presenter Steph McGovern, who is backing the American Express shop small campaign, says: "It's really important to support local independents and high streets as we start shopping again. Whether it's a treat for yourself or a friend, or your regular weekly shop, you can find everything you need on some of the fantastic high streets across the UK."
