THE devoted mother of a teenage boy with cancer has decided to write a book about her family’s journey over the years.

Charlie Ilsley from Emmer Green was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, the most high-grade brain tumour found in children when he was eight years old.

He has undergone countless operations and even more hospital trips since to help rid him of this cancer.

His mum, Toni, has written a book about the family’s journey with Charlie since his cancer diagnosis in 2015.

Toni said: “It’s called ‘Never Give Up’ because we never will.”

Speaking about why she decided to write the book, Toni said: “I wrote it for a lot of reasons.

“I needed to get it out of my head and on paper.”

She continued: “I didn’t want to forget any details because Charlie was too young to remember most of it.”

Toni said she has written the book for Charlie and when he is older she will give him the book to read.

She also hopes it “might give someone else the courage to do what we did”.

Toni said the book should be ready in about three weeks and will be available on Amazon.

There will also be the chance to buy the book from Artisan’s Handmade and the Emporium in Caversham.

Toni added she hopes to do a book signing in Artisan’s Handmade too.

Charlie flew to Mexico earlier this year in June for potentially life-saving cancer treatment in the form of Immunotherapy.

After finishing treatment in Mexico, Toni, Charlie and dad Mark returned to England to self isolate.

Toni, her 31-year-old daughter Jess and Charlie have since returned to Mexico where Charlie had an MRI scan on August 7 to see if treatment has worked.

The scan results showed Charlie’s “cancer is stable meaning no growth since March” and Toni said she was “so happy about the results”.

The Chronicle has launched a campaign to help support the families efforts.
