THE family of a teenager who flew to Mexico for potentially life-saving cancer treatment are waiting to see if it has worked - a wait mum Toni has described as “mental torture”.

Toni Ilsley travelled to Mexico with her 13 year old son Charlie back in June for Immunotherapy treatment.

The teenager from Emmer Green was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, the most high-grade brain tumour found in children when he was eight years old.

He has undergone countless operations and even more hospital trips since to help rid him of this cancer.

After finishing treatment in Mexico, Toni, Charlie and dad Mark returned to England to self isolate.

Toni, her 31-year-old daughter Jess and Charlie have since returned to Mexico where Charlie had an MRI scan on Friday (August 7) to see if treatment has worked.

Toni said: “The scan is three hours long and pretty hard work as Charlie is not sedated and has to lay still the whole time.”

Following the scan, the trio visited a Mexican ranch where Charlie spent time in the hot tub with his sister.

The family were also able to rest by the pool for a couple of days.

They flew back to England on Wednesday, August 12, and Toni described the flight home as “really hard”.

She said there were no direct flights so the 10 hour journey took 15 hours with a stop over in Spain.

The family is now back home but are still waiting for the results of Charlie’s scan.

Toni explained: “Waiting for the results is mental torture.

“My mind starts to run away thinking the worst always. It’s the most nerve-racking wait.”

Speaking yesterday, Toni said she hopes they will know the results within the next 24 hours.

The doctor treating Charlie has said if the scan results do not show what he wants, he can also give him another drug.

The Chronicle has launched a campaign to help support the families efforts.
