A LOCAL school has shown its support for a long-time school trip activity destination, which is financially suffering due to Covid 19.

Maiden Erlegh School, Earley, shared a Gofundme link on their Facebook over the weekend, urging associates to donate to the Tyr Abad Outdoor Education Centre, Wales.

The school had been attending the site on school trips for many years.

A spokesman for the Maiden Erlegh said: "This year was due to be the 50th year of “Changing the Lives of Young People” for the Tyr-Abad Education Trust.

"The Tyr Abad Outdoor Education Centre is situated in the village of Tirabad near Llangammarch Wells on the edge of the Brecon Beacons.

"Covid-19 has had a significant impact on their operation, resulting in not hosting any school group at the centre from March and it is not likely to be able to resume services to schools until 2021, due to government restrictions on operations.

"This is a charity providing opportunities for young people to participate in a wide range of high quality residential outdoor education activities; developing self-esteem, wellbeing, resilience, socialisation, independence and the ability to work as a team.

"Groups take advantage of the many curriculum based learning activities and also participate in outdoor sports, which include mountain walking, climbing, abseiling, archery, canoeing, kayaking, caving, gorge walking, mountain biking, orienteering and team building challenges.

"The continued Covid-19 related government suspension of operations and restrictions on the residential outdoor education sector have resulted in the centre unable to create income to offset operating costs.

"Thousands of students have enjoyed week long visits to Tirabad and have made memories that last a lifetime.

"If you are in a position to be able to help the charity in this time of hardship - it could help guarantee that future generations of students are also able to have these experiences."

So far, residents have donated a total of £850 since August 2. To donate, gofundme.com/f/tyr-abad-outdoor-education-centre?.
