ACTIVE residents took place in a whopping 'ultramarathon' run around the borough over the weekend.

Runners were taking part in the 50km (more than 30 miles) Reading Round Ultramarathon (RRUM) run last weekend, Saturday, August 1.

More than 300 people signed up to take part in the socially-distanced event, with about 280 people taking part on the day.

In order to maintain safety, social distancing was mandatory, registration packs and briefs were mailed prior to the event to avoid crowds, and sanitiser was used at the start and end of each race.

One participant described the event as"a great experience", saying: "I’ve lived in the area nearly 20 years and didn’t know some of those paths and beautiful patches of countryside existed in Reading!

"The heat made it hard going but I really enjoyed myself (most of the time).

"Hope to see you again next year."

The course started in Berkshire County Sports Club, Sonning, then anti-clockwise around Woodley, central Reading, Caversham, towards Purley-on-Thames, down towards Calcot, Whitley, Shinfield, towards Winnersh, Back round the other side of Woodley and returning to the start point.

Claire Donald, event director, said: "It went very well.

"It was a beautiful day, and runners were glad to be back on their feet again."​
