THIS week, the Reading Chronicle is launching its Dog of the Month feature with help from Dogs Trust Newbury.

Each month, we will appeal to dog lovers who are considering adopting a dog and giving it the forever home it’s been eagerly waiting for.

To kick off, the rehoming centre in Hamstead Marshall is showcasing their ‘Breed of the Month’ as they currently have five gorgeous Greyhounds looking for homes.

Sadie, Buckley, Denny, Guru and Myles are all ex-racing Greyhounds looking for a cosy sofa to rest their paws after hanging up their racing shoes and seeking a slower pace of life.

Contrary to what people tend to think, Greyhounds (and Sighthounds like Lurchers) are often couch potatoes and don’t need as much exercise as everyone expects, instead after an energetic burst they like nothing more than cosying up on a big bed in a warm home.

The leggy lovelies are all looking for a relaxed pace of life where they can put their paws up on a comfy sofa.

Antony Dominy, Dogs Trust Newbury’s Rehoming Centre Manager, said: “Sadly many Greyhounds and Lurchers end up in rescue centres like ours waiting for a loving home to spend the rest of their lives in.

“People often assume they are dogs that need lots of exercise but that’s not the case.

“They are definitely strong and fast but they are surprisingly lazy and very loyal, which is why they make great pets.”

He continued: “All of our Greyhounds are different in their personalities, but all have the desire to find a loving home in common.

“We hope people will be encouraged to find out more about our Greyhounds and, fingers crossed, adopt one!”

Although Dogs Trust Newbury is not open for public browsing, you can still make an appointment to adopt a dog.

The rehoming centre has new processes in place which include social distancing measures to help keep staff and visitors safe.
