The following cases appeared at Reading Magistrates' Court.

June 25:

CARL GILKES, 37, of Basingstoke Road, Reading, admitted four charges of vehicle interference in Wokingham on June 22, 2020. Also admitted commission of a further offence while subject to a suspended sentence order for an offence of theft from a vehicle. Sentenced to eight weeks in prison suspended for 12 weeks due to severity of the offences.

June 29:

TRISTAN BUCK, 26, of no fixed abode, admitted assault by beating in Reading on June 28, 2020. Sentenced to 10 weeks in prison due to previous record of offending. Also made subject to a restraining order.

June 30:

PETER DONAGHY, 48, of Winton Road, Reading, admitted using threatening or abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment or distress in Reading on November 5, 2019. Also admitted common assault of a custody detention officer at Loddon Valley Police Station on April 2, 2020, and admitted common assault of a police officer on the same occasion. Sentenced to 32 weeks in prison due to severity of offence as a threat to frontline public worker, an unprovoked attack of a serious nature which was 'very fortunate' to result in no injuries, and due to previous record of offending.

July 1:

DARREN MAKEPEACE, 35, of Wensley Road, Reading, admitted assault by beating in Bracknell on March 4, 2020. Given a community order to comply with rehabilitation activity requirements and must also undertake 120 hours unpaid work. Ordered to pay £75 compensation. Must also pay £90 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

July 2:

RACHAEL CLARK, 28, of Willow Street, Reading, admitted vehicle interference in Fairfax Close, Caversham on June 18, 2020, and admitted the same charge for an incident in Gainsborough Road, Reading, on June 19, 2020. Also admitted theft from a motor vehicle after stealing £10 in change from a car in Waller Court, Reading, and admitted vehicle interference in Fairfax Close, Reading, on June 18, 2020. Fined £200 and ordered to pay £10 compensation.

July 3:

PAUL TIDBURY, 32, of no fixed abode, admitted assault by beating in Newbury on January 17, 2020, and admitted criminal damage in Newbury namely damage worth £555.60 to a car on January 18, 2020. Also admitted criminal damage in Newbury namely damage worth £403.80 to a vehicle on January 18, 2020. Sentenced to 16 weeks in prison due to 'flagrant disregard for people and their property' and aggravated by defendant's previous record. Also ordered to pay £959.40 compensation.

A fundamental principle of justice is that it must be seen to be done. The principle of open justice is acclaimed on a number of grounds: as a safeguard against judicial error, to assist the deterrent function of criminal trials and to permit the revelation of matters of interest.
