DRIVERS will no longer have to sit through gridlock on Downshire Way after it was fully re-opened to the public following improvement works.

The £3 million project, which began in February 2019, has delivered a dual carriageway between the Twin Bridges and Horse and Groom roundabouts on the A322.

Councillor Chris Turrell, Bracknell Forest Council’s transport boss, said: “We’re delighted this work was able to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic and has finished on time and within budget.

“This road forms part of the important A329/A322 corridor linking the M3(J3) and M4(J10) and the scheme will make a considerable improvement to the flow of traffic along Downshire Way, which has previously been a pinch-point on this important route.

“The accompanying greenway project will be completed in October, the optimum time to plant the remaining trees and hedgerows, to create a better natural environment and habitat for wildlife.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out.”

The work also consisted of lengthening the subway beneath Downshire Way, greenway works to improve the natural environment of the surrounding areas, the diversion of the adjacent southern footway to a quieter route, and more.

There is some minor snagging work and the final greenway elements which will be completed in October and the new traffic signals will be monitored by the council and minor adjustments made where needed.
