Former Indian restaurant, chicken shop and sex club could become apartment-hotel

A plan has been submitted to transform a vacant former restaurant and takeaway shop on Oxford Road into an apartment-hotel.

Number 263 Oxford Road is currently a vacant shop – most recently Indian restaurant Zafran – with a small three-bed HMO above it.

Before becoming Zafran, 263 was home to chicken and pizza takeaway Chicken Base, which has since opened up a franchise on Wokingham Road.

Going back even further, the unit was called 236 Club and was found to be a brothel until 2006.

But the accommodation and empty shop could now become a hotel with four serviced apartments if Reading Borough Council (RBC) approves the proposal.

The plans include replacing the front facing dormer window and a new mansard style roof at the rear of the property provide additional second floor accommodation.

Neighbouring fish and chip shop The Jolly Fryer will become two flats, after council planners approved the proposal last month.
