A COUPLE who should be celebrating their golden wedding anniversary this month have instead found themselves with cancelled plans in lockdown.

Romeo and Jean De Dominicis got married on May 16, 1970 in Maidenhead, and moved to Reading in 1979.

Their daughter Lucia said: "My Dad had been over from Italy for a couple of years already and as he met my Mum here, settled in this country.

"They moved to Middlesex and I was born in 1972, my sister, Daniela, came along in 1974.

"In 1979 they moved to Reading to what is now Alto Lounge in Caversham.

"It was an Italian Restaurant called Villa Capri, but was sold two years later in 1981.

"They have remained in Caversham ever since."

The couple were due to mark 50 years of marriage by going on a cruise to view the Norweigan Fjords on May 9, coming back on their anniversary.

Of course, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the plans were cancelled.

Lucia added: "To top it all off, my father's niece and her husband (Stefania and Maurizio) were due to come over from Italy and go on the cruise with them to celebrate both their anniversary and Stefania's 50th birthday, which is on May 18.

"So it was going to be a wonderful joint celebration."

Despite the disappointment, the couple's family still intend to make the day special.

Lucia said: "The main thing is they are both healthy and safe, and they have each other.

"Lockdown is hard for them - Italians are very touchy feely and like to be around their families often, so they have struggled with missing us and their six grandchildren.

"I have three children: my oldest is a 19-year-old boy and I have identical twin girls who are 15.

"Interestingly, my sister was the same - she has three children, a boy being the oldest and then identical twin girls!

"We are all missing them but we're planing to drop off a hamper at their doorstep so they still get something to mark the day."

The couple are keen golfers at the Mapledurham club, and are looking forward to being able to enjoy their hobby again.

When asked if they would be celebrating their anniversary after lockdown, Lucia said: "It depends on how it will work with flights and going abroad after lockdown, but I think they would like to try."
