NEIGHBOURS have come together today to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Families across the town have decorated their homes and gardens in bunting, rainbows, and flags, and ensured we could still come together for the momentus occasion despite being in lockdown.

Street parties have been held at a distance and many have enjoyed a glass or two alongside a cream tea this afternoon on front gardens and driveways.

Reading Chronicle:

Among those pulling out all the stops was make-up artist Ravarna Hunsdon who decided to take to her street to sing for the neighbours.

She said: "I have a close friend who is currently deployed overseas with the British Army, so I thought this would be a lovely way to say a little thank you to all the armed forces both past and present.

"As well as doing something fun to enjoy and celebrate with all the neighbours."

The 29-year-old, from Tilehurst, entertained scores of families who enjoyed from a safe distance songs such as 'We'll meet again', 'Somewhere over the Rainbow', and after a request for more 'Lean on me'.

Miss Hudson added: "It was so lovely to step outside my front door and sing, and celebrate with everyone on such a patriotic day.

"It was great to see everyone outside celebrating too from their doorsteps."

Elsewhere familes could be seen dotted around the town enjoying a tipple from afar with neighbours.

Reading Chronicle:

Flags and bunting were out in full force with residents around Westwood Glen, Tilehurst, as well as a life-size silhouette of a soldier carrying the Union Jack flag.

Reading Chronicle:

Belle Vue Terrace residents joined in the celebrations by expertly colouring in a 74 on their walls.

Reading Chronicle:

Others got into the spirit even more and dressed up for the occasion including Lianne Boodhun who got to grips with the impressive victory rolls hair style for the day.

Reading Chronicle:

Reading City Football Club based in Scours Lane also made the most of marking the occasion by creating posters from the youth team to mark VE Day together from a distance.

Reading City Football Club based in Scours Lane, Tilehurst, Reading pride themselves at being at the heart of the local community, as we're unable to come together and celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day, which saw the second world war come to and in Europe, we've asked our youth section players to create posters to join in with the celebrations. A big thank you to our Reading City Under 9s, Under 10s and some of our Under 12s for their posters, they look fantastic. Tonight the nation we'll join Dame Vera Lynn in singing "we'll meet again", here at Reading City Football Club we look forward to seeing members of the local community again soon until then we hope everyone is staying safe.
