WE don't know about you, but we are seriously missing spending time catching up with a friend over tea and cake at of one of the many cosy cafés Reading has to offer.

We're lucky that this town offers so much variety, from popular chains to unique independent coffee shops.

1. Tamp Culture Coffee (5*)

An outdoor coffee stand with tables and chairs located just outside of The Oracle, this popular spot on Gun Street is great for any occasion.

Whether you're in a rush on your lunch break or fancy a sit down in the sun with friends, Tamp Culture is ideal, offering only the best coffee.

One reviewer said: "Went there on a whim. I bought a Double Espresso.

"Service was swift, coffee tasted nice.

"The stand is at a very convenient location to catch passing footfall."

Another said: "This little shack manages to offer good coffee, delicious cakes and snacks with a smile.

"I try to go here rather than the usual high street brands. You can also buy coffee to make at home."

2. Nibsy's (4.5*)

Reading Chronicle:

Independent, gluten-free café Nibsy's offers something for everyone, with an extensive vegan menu.

With a unique and cosy atmosphere tucked into the centre of town, the charming coffee shop has all kinds of baked goods, from sweet to savoury - and all entirely gluten-free.

One Trip Adviser reviewer said: "Lovely little place in the midst of Reading town centre.

"Beautiful and good value vegan afternoon tea, with delicious cakes and unlimited tea served by friendly staff. Will come again!"

3. Shed (4.5*)

Reading Chronicle:

Offering gourmet sandwiches and soups, plus coffee and cakes, this independent cafe is also located in the heart of the town.

One reviewer said: "Had a super experience here with colleagues for an informal work meeting.

"Lovely lunch and great coffee. It’s comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere. I really like the set up here.

"We have already planned to meet here again."

4. Picnic, 4.5*

Reading Chronicle:

This independently run, locally sourced and ethical cafe in Reading town centre is very popular, and it isn't hard to see why.

Offering all kinds of food and signature salad boxes, Picnic is perfect for a nutritious lunch break.

One reviewer said: "Good wholesome freshly prepared food and drink.

"Good choices of food and drink.

"The weather was not great, nothing new there then, so it was busy inside. Worth any wait. Well done and thanks."

5. Café Yolk 4.5*

Described as 'a popular neighbourhood pit stop offering breakfast, pancakes and burgers in a casual atmosphere' - Café Yolk is certainly a good option.

Located on Erleigh Road, the extensive menu offers brunch, breakfasts, lunches and drinks.

One reviewer said: "Nice to stumble across such a place.

"We had 'Eggs any style' (poached) served with toast and herby potatoes.

"My fiancee had hers with bacon and I had it with smoked salmon. Lovely!

"Presented beautifully and was served surprisingly quick.

"Absolutely loved it and will come back again for sure. The place is super clean and modern with a great atmosphere.

"Highly recommended. Definitely didn't expect to eat such nice food on our journey today."
