WHILE cafes and restaurants are closed due to the coronavirus lockdown, some are still doing takeaways and many people are looking forward to going out to eat again when this is all over.

But where in Reading can you go out to eat, and be confident your food was prepared and cooked in a kitchen with good hygiene?

Restaurants and cafes, and anywhere else that prepares food, are regularly inspected by food safety officers at Reading Borough Council. Inspectors give scores between 0 to 5, based on hygiene and safety, structural compliance, and confidence in management.

In Reading, eight restaurants and cafes have a current score of 1, meaning they need major improvement, while two places scored 0, meaning they need urgent improvement. Here’s where they are—

 

China Garden

The restaurant on Shinfield Road scored a 0 rating in an inspection in July last year. Inspectors said there was ‘poor’ food hygiene and safety, ‘bad’ structural compliance, and ‘little’ confidence in management.

Cattle Market Cafe

The cafe on Great Knollys Street also scored a 0, in an inspection last January. Inspectors said there was ‘bad’ food hygiene and safety, ‘poor’ structural compliance, and ‘little’ confidence in management.

Bolan Thai Restaurant

The restaurant at Kings Walk scored a 1 rating in an inspection last February. While food safety officers found ‘fair’ food hygiene and safety, they said there was ‘poor' structural compliance' and ‘little’ confidence in management.

Ketty’s Taste of Cyprus

The restaurant on Prospect Street, Caversham, scored a 1 rating in November 2018. While inspectors said there was ‘good’ food hygiene, safety and structural compliance, they had ‘little’ confidence in management.

Monty’s

The cafe on Addington Road scored a 1 rating in November last year. Food safety officers said there was ‘poor’ food hygiene and safety, ‘good’ structural compliance but ‘little’ confidence in management.

Oishi

The restaurant on the Oxford Road scored a 1 rating in October last year. Inspectors said there was ‘poor’ food hygiene and safety, ‘fair’ structural compliance and ‘little’ confidence in management.

Pappadams 

The restaurant on Kings Road scored a 1 rating in December last year. Inspectors said there was ‘fair’ food hygiene and safety, ‘bad’ structural compliance and ‘little’ confidence in management.

Vel

The restaurant on Whitley Street scored a 1 rating last January. Food safety officers said there was ‘fair’ food hygiene and safety, ‘poor’ structural compliance and ‘little’ confidence in management.
