Fears about a potential increase in fly-tipping across Berkshire have been raised, as councils cut some waste services.

Garden waste collection has been suspended in Reading, Bracknell and West Berkshire amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Wokingham Borough Council have not suspended services.

Reading Borough Council (RBC) announced the pause to the service last week, to focus limited resources on the collection of household waste and recycling.

The need to suspend the service is primarily due to staff shortages related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, rubbish collection in West Berkshire could be “significantly disrupted” as bin men with symptoms of the disease self-isolate.

Reading Chronicle:

West Berkshire Council said collecting rubbish from homes is a “very challenging situation”, and have warned fewer staff over the next few weeks could mean less waste is collected.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the council has already suspended household waste recycling centres and bulky waste collections.

Street cleaning and container deliveries have been scaled back.

Garden waste collections in Bracknell have also been suspended due to staff shortages during the coronavirus lockdown.

Reading Chronicle:

Some residents expressed concerns on social media about the potential for people to fly-tip.

Luisa said: "With us all being at home there isn't much we can do but garden and decorate....my fear is that people will fly tip."

The recycling centres in Reading and Bracknell have also been closed to the public following the government’s announcement of a lockdown.

Island Road, Reading, and Longshot Lane, Bracknell, both run by re3, are now closed until further notice.

A spokeswoman from Wokingham Borough Council said: "Our waste collections are still running as normal for now and we have seen a decrease in flytipping since we were all advised to stay at home."
