1. Reading Borough Council chief exec and leader take charge of key decisions
Important decisions on the future of the town are now being taken by the chief executive and leader of the council, with committee meetings scrapped until further notice.
The council will publish urgent decisions via the ‘decision book’ process, which is normally used for non-controversial decisions, during the coronavirus crisis.
2. Reading and Bracknell clap for NHS workers
NEIGHBOURS across Reading and Bracknell joined together yesterday evening to show a display of thanks for NHS staff on the frontline of the coronavirus battle.
Videos show people standing at their doors, windows and balconies clapping together at 8pm on March 26 after a national online campaign urged people to show their support.
3. UK researchers screening volunteers in Berkshire for coronavirus vaccine trial
Researchers in the UK have started screening healthy volunteers for an upcoming coronavirus vaccine trial.
University of Oxford scientists are recruiting 18-55-year-olds for the trial in the Thames Valley region, which includes recruiting volunteers in Berkshire.
4. Flat plan for homeless delayed in Reading area “struggling to tackle drug dealing, prostitution, beatings and burglaries”
Plans from the council for to add a new flat to an apartment block in west Reading to house those at risk of homelessness have been delayed due to the coronavirus lockdown.
The one-bed flat at 72 Brunswick Street in west Reading, which would be rented at affordable housing rates, was set to be approved by Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) planning applications committee on April 1.
5. Controversial extension plan which drew Eastenders star Patrick Trueman's interest returns
A controversial plan to enlarge a house in west Reading, which drew the interest of an Eastenders star, is back.
Rudolph Walker, AKA EastEnders’ Patrick Trueman, made an appearance when Reading Borough Council rejected a controversial plan at 10 Pegs Green Close in July 2019.
