There are new calls to sort out the notorious sewer system at Coate Water after the Queens Drive underpass flooded once again.

Storm Dennis rendered the subway inaccessible for the third time since October.

Five months ago the underpass flooded, bringing wet wipes out of the sewer. Water and raw sewage gushed from the drain cover again during Storm Brendan in January.

South Swindon Parish Council chairman Chris Watts has urged Swindon Borough Council and Thames Water to look into why flooding is a constant issue.

Previously Thames Water has said that the sewers and pumping station are working as it should but has been overwhelmed by the amount of rain as well as wet wipes in the sewer.

Coun Watts told the Adver: “The new pumping station on Malborough Road isn’t up to the job.

"Thames Water can’t keep blaming people putting wet wipes down the toilet unless the government introduces a ban to stop it or they spend the money to educate people. It will keep flooding.

“They need to get it sorted or Swindon Borough Council should be looking at enforcement to make the changes.

“It’s going to happen every time and they can’t go back to wet wipes. There needs to be a resolution.

“Swindon Borough Council can’t do much because of the extraordinary financial situation they’re in but I hope they find the money down the back of the sofa to get it sorted between them.”

Thames Water confirmed it has been cleaning the underpass and will look into the issue.

A spokeswoman for company said: “Recent heavy rainfall means our sewers are carrying far more wastewater than they have capacity for and the system is full.

“This underpass is on our radar and we’ll be investigating the sewer system in this area once water levels have dropped to make sure it is working at full capacity.”

A spokesman for Swindon Borough Council told the Advertiser that it had nothing to add at this stage.

It added that it works with the water company as partners and will continue to do so.
