FIGURES reveal almost 60 burglaries took place in Reading in just three months and half have been left closed through lack of evidence.

Latest crime statistics show how many homes and businesses across the town were targeted by burglars from September 2019 through to November.

In total, 59 burglaries were reported to the police in Reading, most commonly occurring in residential areas.

Most of the residential areas only had one report of burglary. However, five roads in Reading were targeted on or nearby multiple times in the three months.

These included Catherine Street with five burglaries, Ashmere Terrence, Friar Street and West Street with three break-ins and Cremyll Road with two.

There were also four reports of burglary from car parks in Reading, five burglaries committed in shopping areas or supermarkets, two from nightclubs and one from a sport/recreational area.

Of these 59 burglaries, only three are awaiting a court outcome.

Police have completed 29 of the 59 burglary investigations with no suspects found, and 25 cases are still under investigation. In three cases, the crime was unable to be prosecuted.

According to 2017 figures from the home office, nine out of ten burglary crimes do not get solved.

On the Police.uk website, they provide a list of measures that can be taken to prevent burglaries in residential areas.

Such measures include locking doors and windows every time you leave the house, hiding keys and having a visible burglar alarm.
