GREAT Western Railway (GWR) have revealed that all ticket gates at the train station will have working mobile scanners once updates have been completed.

Commuters into Reading have been unable to use their phones in certain areas of the station to get through the barriers for the past few weeks, which has led to further queuing at busy times as scanners have been covered up.

This has led to passengers being forced to queue up to show guards their tickets and be let through manually.

Although the northern and western entrances accept mobile tickets, several of the older machines have not yet been updated.

National Rail encourages use of mobile ticketing, with digital tickets being better for the environment and 'more convenient'.

GWR didn't say when mobile tickets would be operational across the station again, or why use of them had stopped in some parts.

A spokesman from GWR said: "The vast majority of ticket gates at Reading have been improved to accept mobile tickets, but unfortunately a smaller number of older gates are still to be updated.

"Customers may wish to use the northern or western entrance during busier times."
