WEST Berkshire has seen a rise in arson attacks and residential burglaries according to emergency services.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue (RBFS) explained they have seen a rise in arson attacks, particularly against vehicles, with 25 cars being targeted.

However, they didn't say when these attacks happened.

Community safety advisor for RBFS, Sam Mortimore, explained at a Neighbourhood Watch meeting, people steal cars and then burn them to destroy evidence.

He advised residents to use common sense and keep keys in safe places and cars locked to prevent them from being stolen.

At the meeting, police officers added there has been an increase in residential burglaries in the area with money and jewellery being targeted.

Area commander superintendent Nick John explained back doors are the main point of entry and urged people to watch their security and report anything suspicious to the police.

He added there has been a rise in crime relating to sheds and garages that may not be attached to residential premises.

Residents were told to set lights on timers and leave radios on when they are going out or on holiday.

One resident asked what police would define as "reasonable force to defend your property".

Superintendent John said it was "difficult" to answer but said if somebody is in your house do not go downstairs and dial 999 as they might be armed with a weapon.

If you are downstairs and confronted, he told residents to not get into a fight and walk away, make themselves safe and call police.

The next Neighbourhood Watch meeting is being held on February 3 when the speaker will be a representative from Victims First.
