MORE than £11,000 in donations was raised at Broad Street Mall's touching Poppy Appeal this year.

Working with the shopping centre, the Royal British Legion launched 'The Poppy Man' campaign, where customers were encouraged to purchase a poppy and pin it to a soldier placed in the centre, in memory of a silent soldier.

On the 11th day of the campaign, the Broad St. Mall appeal had achieved more than £11,000 worth of donations, with local businessman Richard McCarthy donating £75 to tip them over the £11k mark.

The total amount raised was £11,045.

Nicola Williamson, centre manager at Broad St. Mall, said: "The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal is an event that touches the hearts of many, and this year we wanted to show our support and pay our respects in a bigger way than usual.

"We're incredibly proud of how the Reading community has pulled together to make this initiative the huge success it has become."
