A MARRIAGE proposal was played out in front of thousands of racegoers at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday when David Kelly went down on one knee and asked his partner Consuela Chiriac to be his wife.

Mr Kelly, 47, from Greenham, asked Newbury Racecourse to help him carry out his plan by putting his proposal on the big screen as the pair sat on the official ‘engagement bench’ in front of the grandstand.

A nervous few seconds elapsed before Consuela, 43, said "Yes".

“I came up with the idea and spoke to the racecourse who have been absolutely superb, from the very outset,” said Mr Kelly.

He added: “Consuela knew nothing about it until she saw her name, but the build-up was very nerve-wracking because I am a PTSD suffering war veteran, so it takes a lot for me to be among a lot of people. "It was my way of showing to her that she is my world.

“Consuela had several surprises because her sister flew over from Romania to be here and the first time she knew was when she walked in the bedroom.

"We managed to trick her in every way.

"I hope she trusts me from now on!”

Miss Chiriac said: “David always surprises me but this was a very nice one.

"I feel so special today because everyone was watching me.”
