A BUSY road in Newbury will be closed for days while emergency gas repairs are carried out.

Gas company SGN has confirmed it has had to close Hambridge Road at its junction with Boundary Road.

The junction is closed for eastbound traffic, which means drivers cannot turn right towards Thatcham.

Diversions are in place and a walkway has been put in for pedestrians.

Motorists heading to Thatcham can use the A339 and A4.

The closure is opposite the Old London Apprentice pup but the road is set to be reopened by the end of the week.

A SGN spokesman said: "To ensure everyone's safety, Hambridge Road is closed at this junction to eastbound traffic.

"This has been agreed in consultation with West Berkshire Council.

"Signed diversions are in place for motorists.

"All is going well, we hope to complete repairs, reinstate the road surface and remove all restrictions by the end of the week."
