WOKINGHAM’S Denmark Street car park's last day in operation will be Sunday, August 25.

Euro Car Parks, which owns and runs the site, confirmed to the Chronicle drivers will no longer be able to park at the site from midnight, Monday, August 26.

This comes after council bosses turned down developer’s controversial plans to build 77 flats on the site earlier this month.

Imogen Shepherd-DuBey, Wokingham Town Council leader, told the Chronicle: “This will be devastating for the town.

“It is one of our more popular car parks and people with moderate disabilities prefer it because it is level to the ground and near the shops.

“We hope that some arrangement can be made and this car park won’t be closed.”

Wokingham Borough Council planning chiefs rejected a proposal to build 77 apartments on the car park site after more than 600 residents signed a petition protesting the plans.

Many residents opposed the loss of the car park and one of the reasons WBC threw out plans was because it “would result in the permanent physical loss of town centre parking infrastructure which is necessary to support the planned growth and renaissance of Wokingham town centre.”

Cllr Shepherd-DuBey added: “I personally think they are closing it because when the application was submitted there were lots of complaints about losing the car park.

“If it is closed for a while, fewer people will complain.”
