What's different about this year?

With thousands of people expected to arrive, Reading Festival organisers, Festival Republic, have joined forces with Reading Council to reduce the environmental impact of the event.

Together they are urging festival goers to say no to single use plastics and take their tents home.

People are also urged to think about how they get there and home by car sharing, catch a coach or train and use the station shuttle bus provided.

Festival-goers are encouraging people to bring their own water bottle to refill and taking the time to put the right waste in the right bin by making use of the ‘three bin’ system in operation.

Environmentalist group Extinction Rebellion Reading (XRR) will also be at the festival encouraging people to think about their actions and take care of the environment.

Thames Water will also be working day and night to turn waste from the festival's toilets into renewable energy.

Traffic and travel

For anyone travelling in the Reading area this weekend, it's good to be aware that all roads in and around Reading will be busy, but congestion is expected to peak from Wednesday and Thursday.

Traffic will peak again on Bank Holiday Monday (August 26) as crowds depart.

The council have advised locals who need to get around town to consider their journey carefully, allowing plenty of time for travel and where possible taking the bus, cycling or walking.

What about the weather?

In terms of Reading Festival weather, it's expected to be a mild weekend with little chance of rainfall, but it's best to be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Other key things to pack include a wet wipes, antibacterial wipes, suncream, umbrella, portable phone charger, wellies and a reusable water bottle.
