A MOTHERS’ Union in Earley celebrated its 60th anniversary and a member’s 96th birthday, last week (August 13).

Earley St Nicholas Mothers’ Union branch was started in 1959 by Mrs Haynes, the Reverend’s wife, in the Church Hall which was to become the new St Nicholas Centre.

The union supports Mothers’ Union causes and charities, particularly the Royal Berkshire Hospital by providing practical items in emergency packs for emergency admissions.

They also provide knitted items for premature babies in Buscot Ward and blankets where necessary.

As well as celebrating their 60th Anniversary, they wished their longest standing member Ruth Parker happy birthday.

Ruth who is 96th has been involved at St Nicolas nearly from the beginning.

Ingrid Pooler, the Mothers’ Union Branch Leader, said: “It was a privilege for us to have our previous Musical Director, Peter Durrant, playing the piano for a sing-a-long.

“We had our friends from St Johns Woodley And St Peters, Earley Mothers’ Unions join us for the occasion.”
