Demolition work to ensure the safety of Garrard Street and the surrounding area has started today and is expected to finish by Monday.

The street has been cordoned off on the advice of the Health and Safety Executive after scaffolding collapsed on Thursday, August 1.

As soon as the council receive evidence that there is no further risk of structural collapse, Garrard Street will be reopened.

A Reading Borough Council spokesman said: “Demolition work to ensure the safety of Garrard Street and the surrounding area has started today following the principal contractor developing a safe system of work to follow.

“The work will continue over the weekend.

“It is anticipated the works will be completed by the end of Monday 12th August and as soon as we receive evidence that there is no further risk of structural collapse, Garrard Street will be reopened.”

Three people were taken to the hospital with injuries following the scaffolding collapse but there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.

The scaffolding was being worked on at the Station Hill development site, the first phase of which includes more than 500 homes.
