Tributes have poured in on social media following the tragic death of a hugely popular lifelong Reading fan at the age of just 46.

Steven Gibson passed away on July 28th after sadly losing his battle with cancer.

Mr Gibson grew up near Reading’s former home Elm Park and was a ‘staunch Reading supporter’, holding a season ticket holder at the club for over 30 years.

Steven’s friends have started a social media campaign for Reading fans to hold a minute applause during the 21st minute of Reading’s Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

This fitting tribute will recognise the 21 years in which Steven has been a season ticket holder at the Madejski Stadium.

Amongst the tributes on social media, former Reading captain Ady Williams wrote: “Apologies, only just seen this. So sad Urzzz.”

Another read: “Despite his courageous fight another decent, honest and genuine man taken far too soon. Pre-match or post-match, it was a pleasure to have a beer and talk all things Reading FC. Sleep well, Gibbo.”

A third read: “Not at the game but will be joining in with the applause nonetheless. A true gent that’s memory will live long in the memories of everyone he graced his presence with. Here’s to you Gibbo mate.”

Steve attended Battle Primary School and Reading School and worked as a pharmacist for many years at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

He was also a talented footballer who was well known amongst the local football scene. He represented numerous clubs, such as Westwood Wanderers, Purley, Thatcham Town, Maidenhead United and Robin Friday FC.
