STUDENTS at a Caversham school entertained parents at a Cabaret Evening last week (July 11) to raise money for charity.

Pupils in the Glee Club at St Martin’s Primary School sang an eclectic mixture of songs old and new from Mary Poppins to George Ezra to fundraise for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS).

Club founder Mrs Dingley spoke about the discovery that her first child was deaf just a few weeks after he was born and the help she received from the NDCS.

The NDCS supports deaf children and their families as well as professionals that work with them.

Mrs Dingley said: “The NDCS have offered us support throughout our journey with our son so far and thanks to the amazing singing talent of Glee Club and the incredibly supportive parents the money raised will help other families to receive this support too.”

There was much clapping and singing along throughout the evening with a few standing ovations with £209 raised for the NDCS.

One of the parents was overheard saying “It’s the first time I actually heard what that song was about” after listening to Sophia Withers in Year 5 perform Titanium.

New headteacher, Mrs Kirwan said: “There were so many fantastic performances, I would like to list them all.

“It was a lovely evening that really showed the warmth and friendship we have across our whole school community: children, parents and teachers.”

The evening was also an opportunity to say goodbye to Mrs Dingley who is leaving at the end of term.

Mrs Williams, reception class teacher and current Glee Club organiser, was the musical director for the evening.

Together with one of the school mums who is a professional singer they have made music a key part of school life.
