A CHARITY that supports Reading’s LGBT+ community is set to close unless it raises enough money to pay its rent.

Support U was founded in 2010 and is a support and resource service for the LGBT+ communities and its allies – the only organisation doing so in the south, outside London and Brighton.

The charity needs to raise £10,000 to pay the rent by the end of this month, due to some grants not being issued to them.

Over the past year, Support U has been working hard to move away from relying on funding grants and looking at training and conferences.

The money raised will cover the charity's rent until the end of the year when new grants will be made available and the monies from training will have kicked in.

Lorna McArdle, the CEO and founder of Support U, said: “It isn't the end for Support U, it's just the beginning of a new way of working that will make the organisation stronger and more stable for the future.”

In one month, the charity sees about 100 people in their groups, with 21 people accessing their one to one service and counselling each week.
