PHONE giant Huawei hosted a 5G experiential day at their HQ in Reading with a special visit from Reading’s Mayor.

The event, which took place last Friday (12 July), aimed to help people better understand 5G by showcasing its powers in their 5G Experiential truck.

In attendance was the Mayor of Reading, councillor Paul Woodward, who made his first visit to Huawei’s facilities since assuming the role in May 2019.

The Mayor visited the truck, powered solely by 5G, which is touring the UK and features several ‘demo zones’ dedicated to showcasing how the innovation will change the consumer experience.

Inside, there was 360-degree live streaming, Cloud Gaming and Cloud Computing.

Visitors were also able to take part in a virtual reality (VR) game where they were taken on a journey through 3G, 4G and 5G to highlight the increase in speed and quality through time.

Katy Ringsdore, head of media relations for Huawei UK, said: “The capabilities are far beyond what any of us fully appreciate and understand at the moment and hopefully what we have tried to do here, and will continue to do throughout the UK on our tour, is help people to really understand the impact that 5G could potentially give to us from an innovative perspective in the future.”

Huawei has been leading 5G innovation by delivering infrastructure and working in partnership with carriers such as EE and Vodafone.

EE was the first UK phone operator to roll out 5G in May across six major cities including London, Manchester and Cardiff.

The new 5G network is 10 times faster than 4G, allowing users to download a movie in just two seconds with no buffering.

Miss Ringsdore said: “It’ll be instant so it will be living life in real time using technology.”

It’s unclear when 5G will make it to Reading but Miss Ringsdore “can’t imagine it will be too long”.
