BORIS Johnson MP, frontrunner for the Tory leadership race, met with West Berkshire councillors for a fundraiser.

Mr Johnson, likely to be voted prime minister next month, went to a dinner held at Englefield House, where Richard Benyon, the MP for Newbury, lives.

The dinner was to raise funds for Alok Sharma, the MP for Reading West.

Lynne Doherty, the leader of West Berkshire Council, tweeted: “Good to have opportunity with fellow West Berks Conservatives to hear direct from Boris Johnson.”

Mr Sharma tweeted: “Absolutely delighted to welcome Boris Johnson to Reading for a hugely successful fundraiser!

“Thank you Boris for a fantastic, uplifting and optimistic speech energising the room and speaking about delivering for the whole nation!”

Around 160,000 members of the Conservative party will vote by post between Mr Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to be the next leader of the party and prime minister.

The result should be known by July 22.
