A FAMILY of five, squeezed into a one-bed flat, has been told nowhere larger is available, in another example of Reading’s housing shortage.

Georgia Ellis, 20, is pregnant and due to give birth in three weeks. But she is currently sleeping on the sofa in the overcrowded flat in Laud Close.

Her father, Kenny Haines, 40, said he is trying to find a place for them to move as soon as possible. He said he has been bidding on three-bedroom properties since January.

Mr Haines said Reading Borough Council is trying to move his daughter out into a separate property, but he said this would put her in a vulnerable position.

He said: “Why aren’t they moving us to a bigger property? We’ve been bidding for a three-bed place but not getting anywhere.”

Ms Ellis is studying travelling and tourism at college, and will finish her course this summer. Also in the flat is Shannon Kelly, 23, Mr Haines’s partner, who works as a carer, and two sons Rylie, five, and Colton, 18 months.

Mr Haines said: “We’re a family, we’re trying to be family. It’s just ridiculous at the moment.”

The family are struggling with money, because of problems with universal credit. Mr Haines’s father died last April, but he said he is pushing on.

He said: “I’m dealing with a lot but still cracking on and being there for my daughter. I just wish the council would give us a helping hand.”

David Millward, a spokesman for the council, said: “Mr Haines was a single applicant when he was housed in his current accommodation and he has subsequently re-applied for a larger property following changes in the family composition.

“His latest application is currently being further assessed.”
