THE GREENHAM Cold War Experience is returning following the sell-out performance last year.

Taking place in the historic buildings in Greenham Common, the Greenham Trust has commissioned a re-run of the performances for the end of May Bank Holiday week.

The first staging of the Greenham Cold War Experience was in September 2018 and feedback from the audience was outstanding.

The experience will present scenes from the Control Tower USAF flight control, the peace camp and in the Decontamination Suite, and the site-specific scenes are performed and produced by a professional theatre team with a short presentation about the Cold War and Greenham Common’s role.

Each scene is linked by a guided walk across the common (with the option to drive if preferred).

Chris Boulton, chief executive of Greenham Trust, said: "We are very pleased there is such interest in the unique and dramatic history of the common.

"These Cold War scenes are designed to be entertaining but also to offer an immersive way of experiencing the serious central historical role of Greenham in the Cold War, which had impact around the world."

1980s Greenham Common saw the return of the American forces to the common and the arrival of nuclear missiles when it was announced that the air base would house 96 nuclear warheads to deter the growing Russian threat.

Protests were led by women peace campaigners who camped around the perimeter fence and by the main gates and Greenham Common became synonymous internationally with the anti-nuclear protest movement.

The decontamination suite was part of the military facility in case of chemical attacks on the base.

From Saturday, May 18 to Bank Holiday Monday May 27, there will be performances for the public (on May 18, 19, 25, 26, 27.)

Special weekday performances have also been laid on for schools on May 22, 23 and 24.

The events are suitable for secondary school students of drama and history, but also for older primary groups.

Tickets and schools’ bookings are now available via the Corn Exchange Newbury Box Office.
