A third of candidates for the 2019 local elections in Berkshire are female, figures show.

Only 173 women are standing in the upcoming elections in Berkshire compared to 396 men.

West Berkshire Council has the lowest percentage of female candidates in Berkshire, with women representing just a quarter of those standing.

In Reading, 23 candidates are female out of 57 in total.

Currently, more than half of Reading Borough Council’s (RBC) 46 councillors are female.

Comparably, at West Berkshire Council, just one in five councillors are female.

Polling day for the 2019 local elections is on Thursday, May 2, with all results to be announced by the next day.

The elections are taking place in all six Berkshire authorities this year, with some council’s holding elections for all seats and others, like RBC, for just a third of seats.
