LOCALS have expressed their upset following the news that a popular Reading nightclub could be closed.

After Dark, on 112 London Street, has been a club since the 1970s, and hosts various nights including drag shows, 80s discos and live bands.

However, Thames Valley Police claims the club has been running ‘high risk events’ attracting customers ‘with a propensity for extreme violence’.

This has sparked some outrage among those who used to - or currently - frequent the club, as well as those who don't.

Residents in a nearby flat have complained to Reading Borough Council several times that the club is too noisy and plays music after the licensed hours, at 2am.

Posting on Facebook, John Seto said: "I assume they're referring to the flats above, which were converted from offices and the fact After Dark predates the flats."

Another comment from Apache Rose Peacock echoed this view.

It said: "A nightclub making noise? Which was there before most of the flats were built?"

While Nick Byard responded: "It is no good moving next door to a nightclub then complaining about the noise.

"It sounds like the club has a plan to mitigate its impact.

"We should be supporting independent bars and creative people."

Many have also noted the fact that it seems to be just one family making complaints about the noise levels.

In the comment section of the online article, Chris Biewer said: "I myself have never been to the After Dark, nor live in the area, so I am maybe the wrong person to take a clear side on this subject.

"But there is one sentence in this report that really strikes me: 'Mr Khan said: "There's one single family consistently complaining."'

"And how many people are going to the club?

"So hundreds of people must stop enjoying their lives, for one single family?"

One Chronicle reader, catchmousky, said: "The club was there before the residents of the flats.

"The onus should be on the developers of the flats to soundproof and the club should not be threatened like this."

Another nightclub in Reading was closed for similar reasons in September 2017.

Eva's nightclub, which was in the heart of the town centre, was shut when Reading Borough Council heard about a series of police investigations.

After Dark has recently started serving food, hosting comedy shows, art shows, and will this year become part of the Reading Fringe Festival.

Reading Borough Council will review the premises licence on April 18, and shortly after decide whether to revoke the licence.
