A SHOP in Newbury has agreed to restrict alcohol sales, after the police said it should have its licence revoked.

Hot News, on Market Street, agreed to no longer sell beer or cider stronger than 5.3 per cent, and to only sell cans of beer in multiples of four.

Thames Valley Police asked West Berkshire Council to review the shop’s licence, and recommended the council revoke the licence.

A licensing officer saw two people buy cans of Stella Artois lager from the shop, and then sit outside and drink the beer on the street.

The police inspected the shop two days later, and found staff selling alcohol to ‘street drinkers’.

PC Simon Wheeler said: “100 per cent of the licence conditions were in breach”.

Herish Abdulrahman Hasan, the owner of the shop was previously uncooperative with the police, according to PC Wheeler.

The council was due to consider revoking the licence on Tuesday, April 2, but Mr Hasan has now agreed to comply with the licence conditions, like not selling beer or cider stronger than 5.3 per cent.

The licensing conditions are designed to prevent public nuisance and safety, and in particular stop people drinking on the street.
