A TRUE Reading legend celebrated a milestone birthday this week.

Reading Elvis, more formerly known as David Allon, turned 70 on Tuesday (March 19), and the much-loved character was joined by fans to mark the special occasion.

As a regular at Broad Street Mall, the shopping centre was thrilled to celebrate with the man who turned on the centre's Christmas lights in 2017.

Elvis classics were broadcasted across the soundsystem for the day as well-wishers sent cards to pass onto David, or came in person to wish him a happy birthday themselves.

He was greeted by the centre team and a host of colourful balloons, and was overwhelmed at the gesture.

The celebrations continued into the afternoon, with residents flocking to meet the local hero and presenting him with cards and gifts.

Fittingly, one lady gave him a number of Elvis albums on CD.

Nicola Williamson, centre manager at Broad St. Mall, said: "Reading Elvis is a true local icon - a face about town familiar to every generation, each with their own tales to tell of this Elvis super-fan, so we felt it truly fitting to mark his special birthday with a celebration fit for the King of Rock’n’Roll.

"From all the team at Broad St. Mall, we wish you the happiest of birthdays David."

A JustGiving page had been set up by the Facebook group We Love Reading Elvis to raise £200 through crowdfunding to buy David a DAB Radio in Red, give him money towards new clothes and fund the costs of a cake and card.

The outpouring of love and admiration for David resulted in the total raised hitting more than £1,600 to date.

Many also took to the Facebook page to comment on the festivities.

Alex Kedzlie said: "I shook his hand and wished him a happy 70th.

"It took five minutes out of my day, cost nothing but each and every one of us who did this made David’s day.

"Such a sweet man and always smiling, he really is a Reading legend."

While Lisa Skyes commented: "Elvis is such a lovely, happy, friendly person who has always had time to say hello and entertain everyone that I’m so pleased he was recognised and appreciated today.

"Happy 70th birthday Elvis, you look amazing for your age and deserve a great life as you bring smiles to everyone’s faces."
