Two women were threatened by a man with a knife on Portman Road last week.
Police have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place on Wednesday, March 6 at around 10.30pm outside Tesco Extra.
A security guard approached the offender, who had been arguing with the victims as they entered the shop, before he was shoved in the chest by the offender.
The man then left.
Investigating officer, PC Rich Steele, based at Reading police station, said: "We are appealing for anyone who may recognise the man in the CCTV image to please get in touch.
"Furthermore, if anyone may have information about the incident, please come forward.
"You can contact Thames Valley Police on the non-emergency number 101 or make a report online.
"Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
