AN old restaurant that shut down 15 years ago will be turned into three flats and a cafe.

Ben’s Thai Restaurant, on Royal Court, King’s Road, closed in 2005, and the building has been derelict since.

Reading Borough Council gave permission at a planning committee on Wednesday March 6 for a developer to turn the building into three flats and a cafe.

Councillor Ed Hopper said: “I used to live directly above that restaurant. I have no objection at all.”

The cafe will be restricted to opening from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm, and must be closed on Sunday and bank holidays.

Cllr Karen Rowland said: “I’m very happy to support this. I think the cafe will enjoy a happy future.”
