A GENEROUS woman made a huge difference to an injured man in desperate need by donating her wheelchair to the Reading Refugee Support Group (RRSG).

After noticing a post of the charity's Facebook page asking if anybody had a wheelchair they no longer needed, Cathy Mars got in touch to offer hers.

Along with the wheelchair, she left a heartwarming note to the man, wishing him and his family the best.

Jonjo Warrick, who works for the charity, said: "Our client is from Syria and I think he got an injury in the civil war over there and had needed a wheelchair for a long time.

"Once he arrived here he had to wait for an address to be able to register at a doctor's, and he was then told that there was a 12 month waiting list to get a wheelchair."

Jonjo's colleague suggested appealing to the public and the post immediately received lots of responses and attention.

Speaking about similar kind donations made to the charity, Jonjo said: "It often depends on what is needed and the importance of it.

"One of our clients was a tailor who was looking for a sewing machine, and people were very quick to get in touch to send one.

"Sometimes with newborns, which can obviously be very expensive, we have asked for donations for things parents may need.

"The difference the donations make is massive."

When asked about the nature of the work the charity gets involved with, Jonjo explained: "We support refugees and asylum seekers in Reading and Berkshire and help them with different things.

"We offer English classes and homework clubs for young children, we also have a drop-in group for people."

The aim of RRSG, which is celebrating 25 years this year, is to help refugees to become independent, access their rights and encourage their self-esteem and confidence.
