Staff at the Reading Sue Ryder shop on Oxford Road are recruiting new volunteers to help support local hospice care.

Volunteers are required for various roles at the shop, which stocks a wide selection of vintage and retro goods, high quality second hand furniture, homewares, clothing and books.

Money raised at Sue Ryder shops supports the charity’s care at the likes of Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice on Liebenrood Road.

Joy Stevenson, Sue Ryder Oxford Road shop manager, said: "Our shop Oxford Road has raised many thousands of pounds over the years to support local hospice care at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent, and we’d love some extra help at the shop so we can continue this support.

"We’re looking for volunteers throughout the week, and especially keen to hear from anyone who’d like to help on a Saturday to help with a variety of tasks.

"That might be sorting donations, providing customer service, dressing up our windows to looking after our books, DVDs and music.

"No previous experience is needed and volunteering is a great way to pick up new skills and confidence.

"As well as gaining new friends, skills and confidence, by volunteering at our shop you will also be helping Sue Ryder provide expert palliative and bereavement care to families in and around Reading.

"Anyone interested in joining us is welcome to call in for a cup of tea and a chat with staff and volunteers to find out more, or give us a ring, and we can even arrange a taster session so you can see if you enjoy it."

A current volunteer, who has been helping out at the shop for six years, said: ''I enjoy volunteering as it gets me out of the house and I feel like I am giving something back to the community.

"I love the fact I get to meet new people including other volunteers and the staff are super friendly - there is always a good atmosphere in store!''
