BRACKNELL MP Dr Phillip Lee joined his Conservative colleagues for the launch of a new ‘Right To Vote’ campaign.

The proposal of a second referendum was raised at the gathering on Thursday, with several cabinet and junior ministers thought to be behind the idea.

Theresa May's proposed deal for leaving the European Union (EU) was shot down by the biggest margin in history and the Prime Minister faced a no confidence vote in the aftermath.

Launching the push for a Final Say referendum, Dr Lee said: “The public is sick and tired of politicians on all sides telling them half-truths – and in some cases, blatant untruths – about Brexit.

“The Prime Minister’s Brexit deal is dead… It’s beyond recovery. We’ve been called traitors and saboteurs.

“Given the paralysis in Parliament, it is now clear that a deal is near impossible, and no responsible Government can proceed with a no deal exit. The implications of that are frankly terrifying.

“We’ve been accused of trying to subvert democracy. Some of us have endured physical intimidation and death threats as we have gone about our work in Parliament, which we must not forget, is to exercise our best judgement in the interests of our constituencies and country.

“But we will not be stopped from doing what we think is right for those we are elected to serve.”

The Bracknell politician wanted the UK to remain in the EU before the 2016 referendum and had fallen out with the Prime Minister on a number of occasions.

He famously quit as Justice Minister over a disagreement about Brexit and he made a bold statement, insisting he would not quit as MP after a backlash from residents.

Dr Lee added: "The Right to Vote campaign has one clear aim – to secure that vote.

"It will bring together all the existing Conservative referendum campaigns and act as the vehicle for anyone in our party – Parliamentarians, activists and voters – who sees this as the only sensible option.

"This is about breaking the deadlock in Parliament. This is about securing consent for the next chapter in our great country.

"It is time to trust the people and give them the Right to Vote. To borrow a phrase, it is time to let the people really take back control."

Nearly 54 per cent of residents in Bracknell Forest voted to leave the EU in 2016.
