PLANS for food waste collection appear to be no closer after the authority's top team refused to give further details about possible proposals for the service.

Councillor Hayes MBE, who is in charge of the authority's environmental affairs said 'watch this space' after being asked by Councillor Temperton if Bracknell Forest Council (BFC) had a timeline for introducing the scheme.

The Labour councillor asked: "New government plans to cut down on landfill waste proposed by the environment secretary Michael Gove, include a commitment to weekly food waste collections from every home.

"Many councils already do this. When will Bracknell Forest have such a collection and how will it be funded? There is no funding for such included in the proposed 2019/20 budget."

To which Councillor Hayes replied at a meeting of Bracknell's elected members on January 16: "We all need to do more to stop food waste and I am pleased to see the government strategy on this board.

"Many do not recycle as they could and continue to use their land fill bins."

"There is a potential to seek funding and something that I would want to go out to and have services that may work. I trust I will share your optimism of all of them."

In November, Wokingham Borough Council announced they were set to introduce food waste bins to residents homes by 2020 as part of the council's plans to recycle at least 50% of household waste.

West Berkshire Council has also made the service available to residents.

After Councillor Hayes replied, Councillor Temperton said: "I share your optimism. All of this is encouraging and is all very positive, but as a push to get this all done, what is the time scale?"

Cllr Hayes would not comment on a time-scale but added: "Wokingham have presented how they are dealing with food waste, so watch this space."

The council will meet again on Wednesday, February 27.
