THE star who will be switching on some of the town's Christmas lights has been revealed.

Dancing on Ice winner Jake Quickenden will be pushing the button at Broad Street Mall on Sunday, November 18.

Shoppers and visitors will be invited to attend from 2pm to enjoy live entertainment, with the big switch-on itself taking place at 4.15pm.

Graham Mountford, centre manager for Broad Street Mall, said: “We are really excited about our Big Lights Switch-on event this year.

"Not only do we have a brand new set of lights to reveal, but our star guest, Jake Quickenden is sure to be a big hit.

"There will be something for the whole family to enjoy, so we look forward to seeing everyone here.”

Santa and his elf will also be present, offering families the chance to say hello and get their Christmas wish lists in early.

Customers are encouraged to come photo-ready as there will be the opportunity to receive autographs and pose for photos with Jake once the lights are on.

This event marks the official start of the festive season for Broad Street Mall, which will be celebrated with a range of free festive activities for families every Saturday, starting on November 24.

The centre will also operate extended opening hours from December 3 to take the pressure off Reading’s shoppers in the approach to the big day.

Last year, two switch-on events were held at the exact same time, as X Factor contestants, Jack and Joel, led the event at the Broad Street Mall.

The duo were joined by Reading Elvis after a campaign in the town to get him to lead the switch on of the lights.

Meanwhile, a choir sang as The Oracle lit up for Christmas on November 16, 2017.
