READING Chinese School celebrated an important milestone with an afternoon of cultural performances.

Alok Sharma, MP for Reading West, and councillor Debs Edwards, the Mayor of Reading were among the special guests at the 40th anniversary party on Sunday.

The school was established to provide education in both Chinese language and culture, for children and adults of all ages and backgrounds.

Erika Wong said: "When the School was first established, it was mainly to teach children of Chinese immigrants so they wouldn’t forget their own language. It was also a place where people can gathered to see folks from their hometown.

"Nowadays, as more and more people are keen to learn the language, we welcome students from all background and abilities to study with us. Our aim is to teach Chinese language and Chinese culture to those who are interested."

Every year, the school organises a celebration party which the general public can attend.
