A SCHOOL in Wokingham is set to celebrate its centenary year with a series of events.

Luckley House School, in Luckley Road, will kick off its 100th birthday celebration with a service of thanksgiving on Wednesday, October 31.

The original Luckley School was opened in 1918 by Miss Bertha Drake and Miss Ivy Barratt, firstly in Southland Road, Wokingham and then moved to its present-day Luckley Road site in November that year. The School became Luckley-Oakfield in 1959 when it amalgamated with Oakfield, Arnside in the Lake District, with 55 girls moving south to join 35 Luckleyans in 1959.

The school changed its name to Luckley House School in 2013, and welcomed its first male students in 2015.

Between now and July 2019, the school will be marking its centenary with a host of events, bringing together past and present students, families and staff to celebrate the school's history and look forward to the future.

These include a firework extravaganza on Friday, November 9, a Christmas market on Thursday, November 29 and a big party on Saturday, June 29.

Headteacher Jane Tudor said: "In addition to our big events there will also be a number of projects in School to mark our Centenary. The grounds will be flooded with 100 specially commissioned, ironwork bluebells and we are inviting all the School community and visitors to make their mark by adding a leaf to our Family Tree installation. Two wonderful ways to plant our milestone for the future.

“Members of the Luckley community; past, present and future, are equipped and ready to take on the challenges of life in our society. We are committed to being a force for good. This is as true today as it was the day Miss Bertha Drake decided to open our wonderful school, 100 years ago.”
