PACKED crowds braved the drizzly weather on Sunday for a tour of the oldest and smallest fire station in Berkshire.

Wargrave Station's firefighters held a series of live demonstrations and welcomed guests to the popular annual open day.

Visitors were asked about the possibility of signing up as on-call firefighters, before being shown how to work safely from heights and the potential dangers of cooking.

Matt Hoult, station manager, said: “Despite the wind and rain, the local community came out in force to show their support for Wargrave Fire Station.

"The crews provided a fun packed day with some really meaningful prevention and recruitment activities.

"It was great to see so many people turn up for the open day and the interest shown in becoming an on-call firefighter.

"I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming an on-call firefighter to look at the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service website, where they will be able to find more information about the role.

"I would like to thank all those that attended the event, we really appreciate the continued support.”

Guests donated £190 to the Firefighters Charity and young rescuers had the chance to dress up by putting on the equipment and using a hose reel to hit wooden targets.
