A MOTHER and daughter are taking on a mammoth swim to spread awareness of diabetes and to raise funds for charity.

The Bracknell pair will cover a total of 22 miles- the equivalent of the English Channel - in three months, for a challenge known as Swim22.

Rebecca Knight and her daughter Holli are attempting the challenge in aid of a close family friends who suffer from diabetes.

The swim will began on February 22 and will run until May 22 in their local pool while being sponsored for every length.

Ms Knight, said: “I’m raising money for Diabetes UK as my oldest friend, Lana, has Type 1 diabetes and her daughter has just been diagnosed with the condition.

“I know Lana will be amazing at helping her daughter through all the trial and tribulations that a diagnosis of diabetes at such a young age can bring as she was also diagnosed with it as a baby.

“Another inspiration is my daughter Holli’s great grandmother who raised three children on her own despite having diabetes. These ongoing generational conditions have touched our family so much and show that there is still much to do to beat this.”

People taking on the Swim22 challenge can swim in their local pool alone or, better still, with family, friends or colleagues. The distance can even be split between a team to make it easier for everyone.

Laura Crow, Diabetes UK regional fundraising manager in Bracknell, said: “Swimming is a fantastic way to stay fit and healthy, have fun and set yourself a challenge.

“Whether you’re an absolute beginner or a seasoned swimmer, our team will be on hand to offer swimming tips and fundraising advice.

“Every day, around 700 people are diagnosed with diabetes. When diabetes is not well managed it can lead to serious complications including heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and amputations.

“Every length you complete and every pound you raise brings us closer to our vision of a world where diabetes can do no harm. So sign up and make a splash!”
